The Catastrophic fund was created after Seattle Firefighter, Mark Jones, suffered life threatening and career ending injuries when he fell down a pole hole while on duty in 2003.

Because of the inadequacies in the LEOFF II retirement system, Mark was left to fend for himself and pay for his ongoing medical expenses. 

Rallying to his aid, his firefighter family conducted a department wide, volunteer donation effort and raised money to start a fund.  From these efforts, Seattle’s Bravest Charity created the Catastrophic Fund.  They were used to help pay for his medical premiums.

In addition, Mark’s co-workers spearheaded an annual softball tournament starting in 2007, named after Mark, to add to the Fund.  The tournament continues to this day.

The Catastrophic Fund is available to help any active Seattle Firefighter who suffers an on-duty injury, and who has been deemed unable to work in any capacity.
